For promoting excellent Chinese traditional culture; for providing more exercise choices for the masses who practice Health Qigong
Health Qigong Management Center of State Sports General Administration introduced five sets of new exercises of Health Qigong
In order to dig out and sort out more excellent traditional Health Qigong exercises and to provide more exercise choices for the masses who practice Health Qigong, the Health Qigong Management Center of the General Administration started to draft new exercises of Health Qigong again in 2007 on the basis of the drafting and promotion work of the State Sports General Administration on Health Qigong•Yi Jin Jing, Health Qigong•Wu Qin Xi, Health Qigong•Liu Zi Jue and Health Qigong•Ba Duan Jin. The drafting work was open to all qualified units for pubic bidding as a scientific research project managed by the Science and Education Department of the State Sports General Administration. Through competition of various colleges, universities and research institutes and rigorous assessment of experts, the final results were as follows: Tsinghua University won the bidding for the drafting of the “Health Qigong•Tai Chi Yang Sheng Zhang” project, Beijing Sport University won the bidding for the drafting of the “Health Qigong•Shi Er Duan Jin” project and “Health Qigong•Daoyin Yang Sheng Gong Shi Er Fa” project, Shanghai University of Sport won the bidding for the drafting of the “Health Qigong•Mawangdui Daoyin” project, and Wuhan Sports University won the bidding for the drafting of the “Health Qigong•Da Wu” project.
After undertaking the tasks, each research group did a large amount of literature search and textual research and organized extensive exchange and discussion under the overall guidance of the scientific development concept and the principle of “constantly integrating, exploring, creating and renewing from intension to extension”. They respectively organized different kinds of observation seminars and carried out teaching experiments and scientific tests. During the drafting period as long as two years, they demonstrated repeatedly, absorbed the merits of various exercises and made several changes of their drafts. They indeed did a very hard work in the past two years.
The drafting work, from bid inviting to project conclusion was always under the guidance of a stable assessment expert panel. The members of the assessment expert panel came from various disciplines. They had relatively high academic credentials and authority in corresponding subjects. In the assessment work, they insisted on the ideological line of emancipating the mind, seeking truth from facts, advancing with the times and developing in a scientific way, and finally played a very important role in the drafting work of new exercises with their deep affection for Chinese Qigong, rigorous scientific attitude and unique academic views.
The drafting of the new exercises is another useful attempt organized by the Health Qigong Management Center of the State Sports General Administration. Each of the five newly drafted exercises has its own characteristics. However, they have the following common characteristics: firstly, they collected the essences of the historical exercises, integrated multiple modern theories of relevant disciplines and focused on integration, blend and combination. A number of experts and scholars participated in the drafting work; therefore, the five exercises are all the crystallization of collective wisdom, fully demonstrating the scientific property of the exercises. Secondly, the five exercises are all based on traditional and western medicine, physical education and other related modern scientific theories. During the drafting process of the exercises, scientific experiments were carried out, and both the mechanism and efficacy of the exercises were taken into account, which provide reliable basis for the obvious health-keeping and health preservation effect of the exercises, fully demonstrating the practicality of the exercises. Thirdly, each of the five exercises has its own style. However, they all absorbed the sitting posture exercises and apparatus-aided exercises. And in the meanwhile, they all presented easy-to-understand explanations from the aspect of the origins, characteristics, basis and technical essentials of the exercises, fully demonstrating the applicability of the exercises. In the final evaluation meeting of the projects, the experts gave the following comments: the drafting of the new exercises has excellent topics, rigorous methodology and complete procedures. The five new exercises are diverse in type, scientific, effective and easy to learn. They are all suitable to be promoted and popularized in the masses.
Health Qigong•Tai Chi Yang Sheng Zhang, which takes the connation of the traditional cultural concept of “Tai Chi” ——harmony of Yin and Yang, unity of heaven and humanity and harmony of inside and outside, has inherited the essence of the traditional stick-holding exercises. It is a set of exercises that use apparatuses to guide body movements and coordinate with breath and take mind regulation as the major means.
Health Qigong•Shi Er Duan Jin, which has inherited the essence of different schools of the original exercise, strengthened the movements of neck, shoulders, waist and legs. It is a set of systematic sitting posture exercises which are done in order of head, neck, shoulders, back, waist, upper limbs, lower limbs, chest and abdomen.
Health Qigong•Daoyin Yang Sheng Gong Shi Er Fa contains 12 routines extracted from more than 50 Daoyin Yang Sheng Gong exercises drafted and promoted by Professor Zhang Deguang of Beijing Sport University since 1974. It is a set of exercises that are guided by the Theory of Viscera and Channels, Theory of Yin-Yang and Five Elements and Theory of Qi and Blood of the traditional Chinese medicine and integrated guidance with health preservation, physical exercise with spiritual cultivation.
Health Qigong•Mawangdui Daoyin, based on the Dao Yin Tu unearthed in the Mawangdui Han Tomb, Changsha City, Hunan Province, is mainly characterized by guidance along channels and synchronous movements and thoughts. It mainly focuses on the opening & closing, ascending & descending, rotating & revolving, bending & stretching, tender-stretching & bone-drawing of the body to design to movements. It is a set of exercises with primitive simplicity and elegant postures and focusing on the cultivation of both the outside and the inner-side.
Health Qigong•Da Wu, which takes the Da Wu recorded in the ancient literatures as the predominant idea of drafting, mainly focuses on the bending & stretching, rotating & revolving of joints all over the body. It is a set of exercises that are helpful to lubricate joints and purge and guide Qi through dances.
Ji Yunxi, director of the Health Qigong Management Center of the State Sports General Administration, pointed out that, from the introduction of four kinds of Health Qigong in 2003 to the introduction of five new exercises in the drafting, it no doubt provided more exercise choices for different kinds of people. Drafting and promoting new exercises is a part of their work, but what’s more important is to promote and popularize the new exercises to the masses in a down-to-earth way. In the meanwhile, they also needed to carry out scientific tests in practice, so as to constantly complement the new exercises and improve them day by day. They hoped that the five new exercises could become the symbolic events of the nationwide fitness activities, so that the Health Qigong work can make due contribution to the establishment of a world sports power.
